Fossils of mammoths and hippopotamuses dating back a hundred thousand years have been found beneath the land – they are now in the Natural History Museum.
The Kings Road (now St Pancras Way) was the first road northwards beside the River Fleet, passing St Pancras Church and curving around the site of Cantelowes Manor. In 1991, a mediaeval hearth was excavated at this site.
The area deserves Archaeological Priority Area attention.
Cantlowes manor stood on brow above the Fleet, where there were springs.
The Fleet provided drainage until building main sewers in the 1830s in College Street and along the High Street 1850s
